SFFSG is thrilled to announce that Dr. Frank Asche, Professor of Natural Resource Economics, has been elected a Lifetime Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

AAAS is the world’s largest general scientific society and publisher of the Science family of journals. The Lifetime Fellowship is one of the most distinguished awards in science, recognizing extraordinary impact and achievement across disciplines, from teaching to research to science communication.

Dr. Asche joined the University of Florida in 2016. The primary focus of his research is the seafood industry, but he has also worked to address other challenges relating to natural resource economics, including food production and energy. His recent research topics include the international seafood trade and organization of the food supply chain, as well as the impact of productivity development and fisheries management on seafood production.

Dr. Asche was educated first at the University of Bergen, where he received his B.S. and M.S. degrees, and he received his Ph.D. from the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration in 1996. He taught at the University of Stavanger in Norway from 2000 to 2015. He has been a visiting scholar at the University of British Columbia and the University of Rhode Island; a Fulbright Scholar at Duke University; and a member of the science advisory board for the WorldFish Center.

Dr. Asche is also a Fellow of the World Aquaculture Society and the Institute of Fisheries Economics and Trade; president of the North American Association of Fisheries Economists; vice-president of the International Association of Aquaculture Economics and Management; editor for Aquaculture Economics and Management; and serves on the editorial boards of the journals Reviews in Fisheries Science and Aquaculture, and Marine Policy.

Dr. Asche is also affiliated with the Global Food Systems Institute and Florida SeaGrant.

Over his career, Dr. Asche has helped shape the applications of his research to policy. He was a member of the commission that drafted the current law governing the management of marine resources in Norway, and of the team that created the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Fish Price Index, which is published in every issue of FAO’s Food Outlook. He consults for international organizations such as FAO, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the World Bank and World Trade Organization, as well as several governments. He has also written for leading media outlets such as The Economist, The Financial Times and The Hill.
