Although a trade deficit is bad news for Japan, the big increase in exports to China is a sign of good times ahead

Hmm... does this have anything to do with Trump's policies?

Another sign that Japan is moving into the Chinese sphere of influence. First economically, and then politically. Xi seems more stable than Trump.

Who needs a friend like Trump?

It's obvious who Japan needs for a stable economic growth. Same for us Europeans. And that Country isn't the US.

The fact that the deficit with China shrank has nothing to do with moving into the Chinese influence sphere. The interest of Japan is their business in China which is still huge. From the Chinese perspective the J biz represents a significant number of jobs and the unavoidable 'technology transfers' taking place.

Realise that a lot of Chinese export to Japan is made up by products with Japanese brandnames Japan comparable with the in the US designed Iphone.

Politically are the Chinese important for mutual issues as the South China Sea and North Korea. Both countries have a long term agenda.

They are entirely "avoidable."

Only with 100% ownership

Only with 100% ownership

Only with public policymakers with the guts and honesty to enforce the the rules of "rules-based trade" that the globalist neo-libs always crow on about, but are happy to ignore when short-term corporate interests come under threat.

"Despite a close political and economic relationship..." When will Japan realise that it has no special or close relationship with the US ? Japan is still under US occupation and will continue to be until the people vote in  prime minister with the backbone to stand up to the US and tell them to remove all bases from its shore. The only value Japan has for the US is it ia a piece of land on which the US can place military personnel and nuclear weapons so the US can continue to threaten, bully and dictate to the world.

Yeah, it's called not doing business, but that doesn't bode well for people who want to tap a huge market.

What the trumpists underestimate is that their country is thriving by globalisation and that some of them can maintain small jobs in another country :)

Nope. Its just Japan taking advantage of growth where its available. No different to Europe, Australia, N.Z, Canada, Singapore etc etc. None of them are leaving the U.S sphere of influence. In fact, they are all building up their military deterrence against China and Russia.

They are all navigating the middle path as the most sensible way forward.

As that dummy Tony Abbott once said - "Fear and greed".

One of the few things he was right about.
